The endocrine changes which lead to the menopause result in various physical symptoms such as hot flushes, vaginal dryness and palpitations, and in symptoms of a more physical nature such as irritability, changes in mood and sleep habits. Replacement of such hormones has gradually become the first choice of treatment However, evidence has been put forward that estrogens worsen the risk of breast cancer and increase the incidence of coronary arterial disease and stroke. These factors, plus the marked resurgence of public interest in, and open-mindedness about, herbal medicines in the last two decades, make it relevant to look for alternative, non-hormonal treatments of menopausal symptoms.
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common phenomenon among women in their reproductive years, and is associated with more than 200 symptoms. Irritability in its various expressions is considered to be the hallmark symptom for PMS. However, premenstrual dysphoria is also a common finding. It has been reported that as many as 13% of women with menstrual-related problems have symptoms that would make them equivalent to having a serious mental illness.
